OPRAH WINFREY BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB
OF KOSCIUSKO AND ATTALA COUNTY
KOSCIUSKO, MISSISSIPPI

~ MS Associated Builders and Contractors 2006 Merit Award Winner ~

The Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club of Kosciusko and Attala County uses exposed building components to snag the interest of builders, young and young at heart. This two-story, 32,000 square foot metal building uses interior and exterior walls of glass and plexiglass for more efficient supervision and natural lighting. Throughout the building, flooring color and texture differences are used to further differentiate between activity areas. The first floor opens into a large atrium; featuring a canopy ceiling with a rotated cut-out over the reception counters. To the west, a state of the art teaching kitchen opens to the atrium via a café countertop.  Further west, the gym features a stage complete with big screen, and easily converts to a banquet hall or auditorium with retractable basketball goals and bleachers. Adjacent to the gym is a catering kitchen with serving windows that open into the gym and the outside playground. Two hallways open on the northeast and southeast end of the atrium border a group of activity rooms, including a music room, a junior learning center, a technology room, and an art room. Centered between these four rooms is an office. Located between the music room and the junior learning center is a set of three “practice” rooms. Glass walls allow supervision from outside the rooms. Lockers line the wall below the stairway and beside the elevator, in the atrium. The second floor, the designated area for teenagers, features its own music room, library, and lounge, with built in desks/cubby areas throughout. It also houses administrative offices. The second floor is surrounded by plexiglass walls that open to first floor hallways and atrium. Outside the building is a large courtyard bordered with curved concrete sidewalks, complete with tables and benches. A large curved concrete bench and flower garden in the center of the courtyard, decorated with an original Gail Pittman mosaic, separates a tennis court on one end from an outside play area on the other end. The outside play area features a colorful sport turf for safety.
